Three Unique, yet interesting, things to do in Sebastian

1.  Attend a Clambake festival! Currently scheduled for November 7 – 9, 2014, the Clambake festival will be entering its 12th year. Featuring fresh seafood, local arts and crafts, live music, volleyball tournaments and the famous Kids Zone, this local event is not to be missed.

In the past, admission has been free and funds are raised through t-shirt and food sales. Funds raised in this event are donated to local non-profit groups that are chosen by local sponsoring organizations. The 2014 event will again be held at Riverview Park.

In the past several years, more than tens of thousands of visitors attend this event. The organizers state they go through more than 3,500 pounds of clam strips, 400 gallons of clam chowder, 800 pounds of fresh cod fillets and 600 pounds of fresh shrimp.

Those who believe they have a fantastic clam chowder recipe will want to enter the clam chowder contest and go up against those who also believe their recipe is best!

2.  Take a Cruise. The River Queen Cruises gives family-friendly daily tours to the Indian River Lagoon, the Sebastian River or Pelican Island. They have a 42-foot pontoon boat that is handicapped accessible, has refreshments available for sale and has restrooms available for guests.
Those who travel the cruises are usually able to see such fantastic animals as manatees, dolphins, alligators, turtles and a variety of wild birds, including the bald eagle.
This is a nice relaxing cruise designed to show the best of the local wildlife. If you’re in the area and want to take advantage of this cruise, several things to remember:
• Bring binoculars. It may be hard to spot some of the local wildlife and binoculars will help you see more.
• If there’s even a hint of chilly weather, bring an overcoat or something just in case. You may not need it, but if it starts to get cold, you will be thankful you brought something with you.
• They usually only take the tour if there are a minimum of six people signed up for the tour and have occasionally cancelled when only 3-4 people have signed up. So – just be aware that there is a minimum trip requirement.

3.  See some fine art! The Sebastian Fine Art and Music Festival is scheduled for January 17-18, 2015 in Riverview Park. Attendees will be able to see more than 110 local artists or craftsmen showcasing their wares. These craftsmen are selected from many applicants and are chosen specifically for the quality of their previously shown work. You can see iron workers, painters, potters, jewelers and just about any hand-crafted decoration you can ever imagine.

In addition, each day, there will be local bands and musicians providing free shows. There is an awards ceremony where artists, judged by the other artists, on creativity, execution, display and appeal, are given awards.
Funds raised during the show are used within the local community to promote art appreciation. They also provide scholarships and grant monies to local schools to help increase art education.

Admission and parking are always free.
