Four Interesting Facts About Mosquitoes You May Not Know

The mosquito is a very common pest throughout the world. If you go almost anywhere on this planet, you will run into this pest. Most people know some information about mosquitoes. In this article we will point out four facts about the mosquito which are not commonly known.

  1. Mosquitoes do not like wind. The mosquito is a very lightweight insect. Even the tiniest breeze can blow them away. If you have an outdoor gathering this summer, it is a good idea to have some fans running. The fans will keep your friends and family cool all while blowing mosquitoes away.
  2. Mosquitoes are more attracted to people that drink beer. The reason why mosquitoes are attracted to people drinking beer is not totally clear. It may have something to do with the breath of the beer drinker. The mosquito is attracted to carbon dioxide. Perhaps the beer that is also being exhaled sweetens the scent for the mosquito. It is not fully understood.
  3. There are more than 3500 species of mosquito. The mosquito is believed to have been on Earth for 100 million years. This is far longer than the human. They have had much more time to evolve into a blood sucking creature than we have in trying to figure out how to resist them. The USA alone has over 175 species of mosquito. The females are the bloodsuckers. They drink human blood for nourishment.
  4. The mosquito is the deadliest animal on the planet. The mosquito has transmitted many diseases to humans over the years. Many millions of humans have died as a result of these diseases. Dengue, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile virus, yellow fever and the infamous Zika virus are some of the worst diseases these pests have transmitted. Their impact can be felt throughout history. One famous example is the building of the Panama Canal. Tens of thousands of workers died from mosquito born illness during this massive project.

Conclusion: Get some good mosquito repellent and have some fans going the next time you plan to have an outdoor get together. The beer you are drinking is attracting them that much more. At the very least, mosquitoes hurt and are annoying. It is better to be prepared when dealing with this annoying and sometimes deadly pest.
