One of the perks of living in Central Florida is having access to the beautiful landscapes and natural habitats that exist. Merritt Island is a perfect example of those attributes. There are beautiful nature preserves here and the landscapes are gorgeous.
This large sliver of land can be found between the mainland and the beachsides of northern Brevard County. Cape Canaveral and Patrick Air Force Base are right around the corner. Also, there is the National Wildlife Refuge, a 140,000-acre nature sanctuary.
The name comes from the man who first owned the land. The King of Spain granted the land to a man by the name of Merritt. Before the Spaniards owned the land there were Ais Indians. And before that there were many ancient wild creatures such as mastodons, wild horse and camelids. Fossils for all of those creatures have been found throughout Merritt Island and other parts of Brevard County.
Because of the abundant water supply and heat, Merritt Island is also home to many bugs and rodents that humans consider to be pests. These animals and bugs can threaten humans safety and overall habitat stability.
