Most of the time you won’t see crows around your home, you will hear them. They are a very loud and chatty bird. The sounds they make are thought to convey information such as whereabouts to a mate as well as exerting dominance over an area.
If you have noticed an uptick of crows around your home this could be due to the fact that they are building a nest somewhere around it. Usually crows will pick a nook in your roof which is hidden from plain sight. It’s a good idea to get rid of this nest as fast as possible or you will have a harder time later. Also, if you catch the nest early you can prevent the bird poo which will eventually be scattered around the area.
The best way to get rid of a crow’s nest is by using good old-fashioned elbow grease. But, there are safety precautions one should take. The material in the nest can be hazardous to humans if breathed. Also, crows may not like what you are doing and may dive-bomb you.
What You Will Need
March right up to that nest with your gear on, set up your ladder and go to work. Put the nest and all of its contents into your bucket. You can then dispose of it in the trash. Don’t worry, crows are used to having their nests raided and won’t take it personal. They are very prolific breeders and will start again right away, hopefully somewhere else this time.
The mask and safety googles will prevent small debris from being inhaled. The hat will help against being dive-bombed. Crow pecks can really hurt.
Deterrents – Repellants
There are a laundry list of different kinds of repellants when it comes to keeping crows off your property. On farms they use straw filled human clothing on a stick. This is called a “scarecrow”. I am sure you have heard of one. But in the suburbs the solution needs to be a bit less ostentatious.
If you search the web you will find various bird-of-prey decoys like owls or large ravens which sometimes can do a great job repelling crows. The problem with these is that if you have a birdfeeder these decoys will repel all birds, not just crows.
There is even a “dead crow” decoy which you can lay on the ground. I am not sure about the effectiveness of this approach but it is quite interesting you must admit. Crows are smart birds. They belong to the corvid family of birds. The corvids are among the most intelligent birds on Earth and such members include the Blue Jay, Ravens, Magpies, scrub jays and various others. They are not to be underestimated.
