be prepared for hurricane season

Hurricane Preparedness is Something to Keep in Mind

Hurricane season lasts from June 30th to November 30th in 2025. Every year you can expect a few dozen major storms to develop, all of which may progress to hurricane size. Winds of 74 mph or more are automatically classified as hurricane strength, a fact that also comes with the storm getting its own name designation.

Hurricane names you may be familiar with are Hurricane Andrew, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Ian. Though these names may sound harmless enough, the damage they do isn’t. The total cost of all US billion-dollar disasters over the last five years (2020-2024) is $746.7 billion, with a 5-year annual cost average of $149.3 billion.

Being prepared is not just the smart thing to do, it is also a way to bring peace of mind. Knowing that you are as prepared as you can be is worth the time and effort spent preparing. Below is a list of things you can do to be prepared:

  1. Non-perishable Food – Buying cans of food or MRE‘s allows you to have a food supply which will last through the most difficult times. This will also buy you time to figure out if you need to relocate. Power may be out, so you want your food to not go bad without refrigeration.
  2. Secure Loose Objects – Make sure that all objects which can become airborne are stowed away or fastened. These objects can be turned into dangerous missiles with the right amount of wind force.
  3. Generators – Make sure you have enough fuel for your diesel generator or gas generator. These machines can power fans and even a small fridge where you can make enough ice to stay cool.
  4. Secure Entryways – Make sure small access points to your home are well guarded as pests will try to make their way in to hide from the storm. Consult with a professional pest control agent to learn more.

These tips and others may help you prepare for strong storms that may affect where you live. It is always advised that you evacuate the area if a hurricane is forecasted to make landfall where you live. Your life is the most precious thing you have and is not worth risking staying home during a hurricane.
