DIY pest control can backfire

Reasons You May Want to Hire Pest Service Instead of DIY

Doing tasks around your home is nothing new. You cook, clean, repair small appliances, change the air filters and do your laundry. These are things you have been doing for years and saw your parents do before you. They are pretty cut and dry when it comes to the complexity.

There are other jobs around the house which may not be as easy to learn. Some of these are plumbing, roof repair, fridge or dishwasher repair or structural fixes to your home. If you have ever tried to perform pest control at home, then you may already know that it can also fit into this category.

Pest control has many facets. It is much more than just laying a trap or spraying a corner with some store-bought bug spray. In this article we want to go over some reasons you may consider hiring a professional pest control service instead of attempting the job yourself.

I. Identifying the Pest

Sure, you know what a roach or mouse looks like when you see it, but did you know they are many different species of ant? Some of them search for and ant a certain kind of food while others are in search for a totally different kind. Termites are the same way. Here are examples of just some of the ants you may encounter:

Each one of them requires a specific bait, repellant and treatment. If you don’t know how to identify them, you may be wasting a great deal of time and money.

II. Pest Control Products Can Be Dangerous if You Don’t Know What You are Doing

Most of the pest control supplies you buy over the counter has some sort of insecticide. This stuff is great at killing a bug but can also be harmful to humans and pets. Spraying it inside your home is a risk, especially if don’t know when and where to apply it.

Even though many over-the-counter sprays are safe for humans they can still injure small pets. The vapors can linger in the air and be inhaled. These are serious issues that should be considered when applying unfamiliar chemicals to your living space.

III. You Can Actually Make Your Pest Problem Worse

If you use the wrong pest control solution or the wrong amount, you can drive pests away from an area temporarily only for them to return soon after. Not only that, but you have spread the infestation by driving them to parts of your home or lawn where they previously were not located.  In these new areas they will lay eggs, give birth and infest the new area.

In the end, doing your own pest control comes with a serious learning curve. It can be dangerous, tedious, unfruitful and even end up being more expensive than if you just hired your local pest control expert.
