Seasonal Pest Control: Preparing Your Home for Every Season

Pest control is something you should think about for every season not just the warmest months. I was recently sitting in an airport waiting for my flight when I struck up a conversation with a nice woman. She randomly ended up on a topic of having a rat in her home.

She was explaining that this happened in mid-winter at her home in New Hampshire. Many people think of summer and spring and of bugs, reptiles, and spiders when they think of pest problems. The truth is that no matter what time of year it is, pests will be looking for your food and shelter.

There are two ways to go about handling pests regardless of what time of year it is. You can build preventative measures, and you can treat an existing problem. There are also two ways to treat the existing problem. You can try natural solutions (which have limited effectiveness) or you can use stronger industrial chemicals. But it’s also important to think about your pets (cats, dogs, rabbits, birds etc.)

Pet-Safe Solutions:

Natural Repellents: Use cedarwood oil for fleas or diatomaceous earth (food-grade) for crawling insects.

Physical Barriers: Pet-proof trash cans and sealed pet food storage.

Grooming Tips: Regular pet grooming to prevent flea infestations.

Safe Traps: Non-toxic glue traps or catch-and-release rodent traps.

Back to the nice woman at the airport. It wasn’t until she was done with her story that I told her I worked in the pest control industry. I gave her some advice on her rat problem. I wanted to emphasize that monthly pest control was safe, affordable and convenient and that before she drove herself mad trying every method recommended on Google, she should give a professional pest control company a shot.

I hope she listened to me and did not spend too much money and time trying half-proven solutions found online. Oftentimes, if you want something down right and done quickly, it is worth your time to hire a professional. This holds especially true if you are busy and don’t have the time to experiment with various pest control methods.
