Why Do Some Termites Have Wings?

If you are a homeowner you probably know some information about termites. You are aware of the damage they can do and you are probably aware that preventative measures must be taken in order to keep them from attacking your home. Heaven forbid you have ever have an infestation. But if you have, you may have thought to your self “Where do these things come from?” or “How did they get here?”

This is where the winged termites come in. There is one section of the colony called “swarmers”. They are also referred to as Alates. This particular termite grows wings for a very short period of its life and takes flight from the colony. It’s job is to go away from the colony and start a new colony of its own. The male and female rendezvous and see if they can make a go of it. The very first things they look for are food and water. Your home may end up being the food if you are not protected. The good news is that most flying termites die off naturally.

The other types of termites are termite king & queen, workers & soldiers. The job of these termites is obvious by their name. Each termite has a specific job to keep its colony running and growing.
